What is most different about soccer in America vs. in
Europe? |
George: |
There are not many differences between American and European soccer, but from my
experience as a youth player and what I see here, in Europe the youth players
are better organized and understand the game much better. This
probably is because youth begin competitive club soccer at 5 years of age. |

Where did you learn most of your training techniques from? |
George: |
I started learning techniques in Africa as a child by playing 2 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 3 on the street. At 17 years old, I
passed my first soccer certification called
J.A.T (Jeune aniteur technique) this certification allows you to train children who are 5 years old. At 19 years old, I passed my I1 (initiateur first) this certification allows you to train 6 and
9 year olds. At 21 years old I passed my I2 (initiateur second) this certification allowed me to train 9 through 12 year olds. In the same year
I passed my I3 (initiateur third ) also called "Animateur senior", which allowed me to train all the way up to U18 and older. After all of these certifications, I went to Saint
Denis university for one year and took the writing test for the B.E.E.S. I took the practical test for the B.E.E.S at "De creps de montry", which took me another year, and thats how
I became certified. |

What is your vision for youth soccer? |
George: |
My vision for youth soccer is to focus more on technique. At ages 6 and 7, the kids should be taught only skills. At ages 8 and 9 the second initiation, they should learn technique with movement, as well as coordination. From ages 10 to 12, the
pre-formation we should include physical as well as tactics. Ages 13 and older the players should have a broader view of physical and tactics, as well as when being trained they should be placed in a game situation. Also the U11 age group should never play on a big field, only
on a small field because at that age the player is not ready to run on a big field, they should play on a half a field so they can have more contact with the ball to develop their initiation in soccer. Most of the kids this age cannot
kick the ball a long way or take a corner kick. One big problem in
the U.S. is that at the end of formation our players do not have the
opportunity to play in the MLS. There is no alternative to play in
soccer schools as they do in Europe. Typically, players will have to play in
a Div I College to get the opportunity to move on to MLS. We need
for there to be another option for 14 and 15 year olds to enter soccer
schools or academy's as a stepping stone to professional soccer. As
well, Premier soccer should start at 14 or 15 years rather than the
current 16 years of age. |
